Frequently Asked Questions

Is sand included?

Yes! While there are a number of different materials that can be used, sand works the best. We've tested many different types of sand and alternative materials searching for the best pattern maker and found a winner. Our sand is hand washed (to remove any powdery residue) and 100% silica free.

How do I know if it will work with my phone?

Bluetooth is all that is required to connect and use the SoundScribe. This includes mobile phones and tablets (iOS and Android) as well as a computer (Mac, Windows, Linux, etc). Nearly all laptops come with Bluetooth capabilities which will allow you to connect and use SoundScribe.

Is a phone, tablet, or laptop required to use SoundScribe?

Yes and no. SoundScribe is designed to be used wirelessly using any Bluetooth capable device. Frequency generating apps are then used to generate the sound frequencies that make the patterns. Like using Spotify to play music, there are apps for playing tones which SoundScribe uses to make patterns.

A 3.5mm auxiliary input is also integrated which can be used with a microphone or other amplified device or mixer. You could also use this input to connect directly with your phone, tablet, or laptop in the case where Bluetooth connectivity is undesired.

Can you play music through SoundScribe?

Yes! SoundScribe is a Chladni plate and Bluetooth speaker capable of playing any type of music. While sound quality is quite good, Cymatics is the focus with music as an added benefit. Volume is enough to fill a small room.

Does music produce patterns?

Yes! Music is a different type of Cymatics experience and works best with certain types of music. Slow moving Classical music works best as you can see patterns transition from note to note.

I bought a SoundScribe. What else do I need?

Everything you need to use and maintain the SoundScribe is in the box. Aside from that, you only need a Bluetooth device and an app to generate the sound frequencies. Links to a number of free apps and frequency resources are provided in our Getting Started page. We also have a YouTube channel with many different pattern producing tones to experiment with.

Can SoundScribe be disassembled?

No. Many people have asked if they can paint their SoundScribe. You can paint it, but you'll need to carefully mask off the plate as it cannot be removed. Painting is not recommended.
